Definition of Tetanus

Tetanus

Tetanus is a frequently lethal infectious disease caused by the Clostridium tetani bacterium. This bacterium typically enters the body through a puncture, cut, or open wound, leading to severe and painful muscle spasms. One of the most notable symptoms is the 'locking' of the jaw, making it impossible to open the mouth, and it can ultimately result in death. The bacteria produce a toxin that affects the motor nerves, which are responsible for muscle stimulation. To prevent tetanus, it is crucial to promptly clean and cover any open wounds and receive a tetanus vaccination. Regular booster shots are essential to maintain immunity. Individuals who have not been vaccinated and sustain puncture wounds or cuts should receive a tetanus shot and a series of vaccines immediately. Those who have been vaccinated but are uncertain about the timing of their last tetanus shot should get a booster. This condition is also referred to as lockjaw.
