Definition of Humorism

Humorism

Humorism in medicine pertains to a fluid or semifluid substance. Specifically, the term refers to the fluid found in the eye's anterior and posterior chambers. This notion was central to an ancient theory that suggested health was achieved through a balance of bodily fluids, known as humors. An imbalance among these humors was believed to be the cause of disease. The humors included phlegm (water), blood, black bile (thought to be secreted by the kidneys), and yellow bile (secreted by the liver). The humoral theory, also known as humoralism, was developed long before the time of Hippocrates (around 460-375 BC). It was not conclusively overturned until 1858 when Rudolf Virchow published his groundbreaking work, "Cellularpathologie," which established the cellular basis of pathology. Today, medical science relies on cellular and molecular principles, and the concept of humors has been largely discarded, except for the aqueous humor and similar substances.
