Definition of Calcaneal spur

Heel Spur:A heel spur is a bony growth that extends from the back or underside of the calcaneus, commonly known as the heel bone, and can make walking uncomfortable. These spurs are linked to inflammation of the Achilles tendon and lead to soreness and pain at the heel's back, which worsens when pushing off with the foot's ball. Spurs located under the foot's sole are connected to inflammation of the plantar fascia, a tissue resembling a bowstring that extends from the heel across the sole. These spurs can cause localized discomfort, exacerbated by stepping down on the heel. Calcaneal spurs and plantar fasciitis may occur independently or may be associated with underlying conditions like reactive arthritis. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation and prevent further injury. Heel lifts can alleviate pressure on the Achilles tendon and ease pain from spurs at the back of the heel, while donut-shaped shoe inserts help relieve pressure on plantar spurs. In rare cases, surgery may be necessary for persistently inflamed spurs.
