MME, or Metallomembrane, is another term for membrane metalloendopeptidase, and is commonly referred to as CALLA (Common Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Antigen). This marker is frequently associated with the most prevalent type of acute lymphocytic leukemia, though there is some debate about its specificity. MME is the same as neutral endopeptidase and is a target for antibodies that act against podocytes, the cells forming the primary filtration barrier in the kidney. Genetic mutations that result in a shortened MME can lead to a kidney condition known as membranous nephropathy. The gene responsible for MME is located on chromosome 3 between the regions 3q21 and 3q27. MME is also known by other names, including CD10, membrane metalloendopeptidase, enkephalinase, and neprilysin.
