Liver failure is a medical condition where the liver is unable to perform its functions due to damage. This can happen suddenly, known as acute liver failure, or gradually over time, referred to as chronic liver failure, depending on the underlying cause. Various diseases and conditions can lead to liver failure, such as hepatitis B and C, hemochromatosis, excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, toxins, and any condition causing liver scarring. Symptoms of liver failure include nausea, vomiting, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), confusion, drowsiness, abdominal swelling, a tendency to bleed easily, and cognitive decline. If not addressed, liver failure can be life-threatening, and in some instances, a liver transplant might be necessary.
