Cryophobia refers to an intense and irrational fear of cold, encompassing both chilly weather and cold objects. Even though individuals with this phobia recognize that their fear is unreasonable, they still experience significant anxiety. To steer clear of the cold, they might choose to live in warmer regions, dress in heavier clothing than necessary, stay indoors during cold spells, and avoid consuming cold foods or drinks with ice. The term "cryophobia" originates from the Greek words "kryos," meaning cold or frigid, and "phobos," meaning fear. "Kryos" has also contributed to English terms like "cryometer," an instrument for gauging extremely low temperatures, and "cryosurgery," which involves medical procedures that freeze and eliminate unhealthy tissue. Related terms include "cryogenics" and "cryotherapy."
