Anemia refers to a condition where the blood has fewer red blood cells or a lower amount of hemoglobin than normal, reducing its ability to carry oxygen. People with anemia often experience fatigue, appear pale, may have palpitations (a rapid heartbeat), and can become short of breath more easily than usual. Children with long-term anemia are more susceptible to infections and may face learning difficulties.Anemia can occur through three main mechanisms, which may work alone or together: bleeding, excessive destruction of red blood cells, and insufficient production of red blood cells. Women are more prone to anemia compared to men due to monthly blood loss during menstruation. In adults, anemia frequently results from chronic blood loss, either from menstruation or small, often unnoticed bleeding. In children, inadequate dietary iron is a common cause. Additionally, medications like aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can lead to anemia by causing gastrointestinal bleeding. There are numerous types of anemia, ranging from common to rare, including conditions such as benzene poisoning, Fanconi anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and many other blood disorders. The term "anemic" is also used metaphorically to describe something that lacks energy, such as an unenthusiastic attempt to hit a ball or a weak response in any situation.
