Definition of Yankauer Suction

Yankauer Suction

A Yankauer suction is a rigid, hollow plastic suction tip used to clear secretions, blood, vomit, or other debris from a patient's mouth and upper airway. Its sturdy design and rounded tip allow rapid, effective suctioning of thick fluids without damaging delicate tissues.

Keeping the airway clear is essential during resuscitation, surgery, and the care of patients who cannot protect their own airway, since obstruction or aspiration of fluids can rapidly lead to hypoxia. The Yankauer is a standard tool on crash carts and in emergency and operating settings, used as part of airway management to maintain a clear passage for breathing and ventilation.
