Unresponsiveness is a state in which a person does not react to voice, touch, or painful stimulation, indicating a serious impairment of consciousness. It is one of the first and most important findings a rescuer checks, because it can signal cardiac arrest, stroke, severe head injury, low blood sugar, overdose, or other critical conditions.
When someone is found unresponsive, the responder should check for normal breathing and a pulse; if these are absent, CPR is started immediately and emergency services are activated. If the person is unresponsive but breathing normally, they are placed in the recovery position and monitored closely. Rapid recognition of unresponsiveness is the trigger for the entire emergency response sequence.
