TAR Syndrome:TAR stands for Thrombocytopenia (a condition of low blood platelets) and Aplasia (the absence) of the radius (the long bone on the thumb side of the forearm), which are characteristics of this syndrome. Individuals with this condition have phocomelia (limb abnormalities resembling flippers) but always have thumbs. The fibula (the smaller bone in the leg) is often missing. The risk of bleeding due to a low platelet count is significant during early infancy but decreases with age. This syndrome is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning one gene is inherited from each parent on a non-sex chromosome. It is also known as thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome, aplasia-thrombocytopenia syndrome, or tetraphocomelia-thrombocytopenia syndrome.
