Definition of Sweat gland tumor

Sweat gland tumor

A sweat gland tumor, known as a syringoma, is a benign skin growth that originates from cells associated with sweat glands, specifically those referred to as eccrine cells. These skin lesions typically emerge during puberty or adulthood and manifest as small bumps, measuring 1-3 millimeters in diameter, just beneath the skin's surface. While syringomas are most commonly found on the eyelids and around the eyes, they can also appear in other areas such as the armpits, lower abdomen, and vulva. The condition can present as either a few localized lesions or numerous ones spread over a larger area.Syringomas are more prevalent in women and can have a hereditary component in certain cases. They are also linked to genetic conditions like Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Marfan syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Treating syringomas can be challenging due to their location on the eyelids and face. However, an effective method that results in minimal scarring involves using a hair removal electric needle. This technique involves inserting the needle into the lesion and applying short bursts of low-voltage electricity to eliminate the tumor. Additionally, a CO2 laser technique has shown promising results, as reported in a 1998 study by Kang WH (Surgery, Dec;24(12):1370-4).
