Definition of Sign language

Sign language is a form of communication that involves using hand signs, body movements, and facial expressions, primarily utilized by individuals who are deaf. Various sign languages exist, such as British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL). BSL and ASL are not mutually intelligible, with BSL featuring a two-handed alphabet, unlike ASL. In some developing countries, deaf communities may adopt sign languages introduced by educators and missionaries from different regions. For instance, some people in Madagascar use Norwegian Sign Language. Conversely, deaf children in Nicaragua have developed their own unique sign language. Research into the newly developed Nicaraguan Sign Language (NSL) has shown that children have an inherent ability to structure language naturally. See also: American Sign Language.
