Definition of Rectouterine pouch

Rectouterine Pouch:This is a space within the cavity located between the uterus and the back wall of the pelvis. The term "cul-de-sac," commonly referring to a "blind pouch or cavity closed at one end," is specifically used to describe this area. Consequently, we have culdocentesis, which is the procedure of introducing a needle through the vaginal wall into the cul-de-sac to withdraw fluid; the culdoscope, an endoscopic instrument used to examine the cul-de-sac; and culdocentesis, the aspiration of fluid from the cul-de-sac. In French, "cul-de-sac" translates to "bottom of a sack." As early as the 13th century, it was used to describe a dead-end street or a blind alley. In French, the third letter in "cul" is silent, pronounced "ku," whereas in English it's pronounced "kul."The rectouterine pouch is also referred to as the recto-uterine excavation or the pouch of Douglas, named after the Scottish anatomist James Douglas (1675-1742). He extensively studied this part of the female anatomy and has his name associated with at least three other features in the region.
