Definition of Paralysis, stomach

Paralysis, stomach

Stomach Paralysis:Gastroparesis is a medical condition characterized by the paralysis of the stomach muscles due to issues either within the stomach muscles themselves or the nerves that control them. This results in improper emptying of food and secretions from the stomach, often leading to symptoms like nausea and vomiting. Gastroparesis can sometimes be linked to problems in other parts of the digestive system. Diabetes is the most frequent cause of this condition, so much so that there's a specific term, gastroparesis diabeticorum, used to describe gastroparesis caused by diabetes. Diagnosis typically involves a nuclear medicine test that evaluates how the stomach empties. Treatment options include medications that enhance stomach muscle contractions, sometimes surgery, and experimental electrical pacing. The term "gastroparesis" combines "gastro," meaning related to the stomach, with "paresis," indicating a loss of strength, thus denoting a weakening of the stomach.
