Foreskin: The fold of skin that covers the tip (the glans) of the penis is also known as the prepuce. At birth, only about 5% of boys have a foreskin that can be retracted. This is because the tissue development of the foreskin is generally incomplete at birth. Consequently, in approximately 96% of newborn boys, the foreskin cannot be fully separated from the glans. By the age of one, the foreskin can be retracted in half of the boys, and by the age of three, it can be retracted in 80% to 90% of uncircumcised boys. Circumcision in newborns reduces the likelihood of penile cancer and diminishes the risk of cervical cancer in sexual partners. It also reduces the chances of urinary tract infections and lowers the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly HIV.
