Definition of First Responder

First Responder

A first responder is the first trained person to arrive at the scene of an emergency and begin care before additional medical personnel take over. This group includes emergency medical technicians, firefighters, police officers, and other public-safety personnel, as well as trained workplace responders.

First responders are trained to rapidly assess a scene for safety, recognize life-threatening conditions, and deliver immediate interventions such as CPR, AED use, bleeding control, and airway management. Because their actions occur in the earliest, most critical minutes of an emergency, the speed and quality of first-responder care strongly influence patient outcomes, particularly in cardiac arrest where every minute without CPR lowers survival.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
