Definition of Trachelectomy

Trachelectomy:This procedure involves the surgical removal of the cervix, the lower section of the uterus that extends into the vagina. It is primarily performed on younger women who have early-stage cervical cancer, where the tumor does not exceed 2-3 centimeters in size. During this operation, the cervix and the upper portion of the vagina are excised, but the rest of the uterus remains intact. Additionally, lymph nodes in the pelvic area are typically extracted via minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to determine if the cancer has metastasized.Following a trachelectomy, it may still be possible for a woman to conceive. A suture is placed at the base of the uterus, functioning like a drawstring, to substitute for the cervix during pregnancy. However, there is an increased risk of miscarriage, and delivery must be performed through Cesarean section.Trachelectomy is also known as cervicectomy. The prefix "trachel-" originates from the Greek word "trachelos," which means neck, referring to the cervix as the neck of the uterus.
