Definition of Inflammatory response

Inflammatory response

The inflammatory response is a vital bodily reaction to injury and disease, marked by the classic symptoms of pain, localized heat, redness, and swelling. This response is triggered by various factors, such as a mosquito bite, splinter, viral infection, bruise, or broken bone, which prompt the body to send cells and chemicals to the affected area to facilitate healing. Inflammation is crucial to the body's defense mechanisms, acting as an essential protective measure.Acute inflammation is typically brief, lasting only a few days. However, when it persists, it becomes chronic inflammation, which can continue for weeks, months, or longer. Interestingly, the process of inflammation, while aimed at healing, can also cause tissue damage. As a result, inflammation may contribute to a wide range of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, liver cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and others.
