Definition of Fear of worms (parasitic)

Fear of Worms (Parasitic):Helminthophobia is a persistent and irrational fear of being infested with parasitic worms known as helminths. These worms’ eggs can contaminate air, water, and food, especially in areas with poor hygiene. Foods like pork and beef, as well as pets, wild animals, toilet seats, and fecal matter, can be sources of contamination. Common types of helminths include pinworms, roundworms, and tapeworms. Once these eggs enter the body, they typically hatch and reside in the intestines. While the illnesses they cause can range from mild to severe, one such disease, trichinosis, can result from consuming contaminated pork and may lead to serious complications or even death.Individuals with helminthophobia often experience excessive anxiety about contracting trichinosis and other helminth-related diseases, despite taking preventive actions. For instance, they might completely avoid pork, even when they know it has been cooked thoroughly, like in pork chops or sausages. Additionally, they may obsessively worry about helminths despite maintaining a meticulously clean living environment. The term "helminthophobia" is derived from the Greek words "helmins" (worm) and "phobos" (fear).
