The modern classifications and codes for diseases are detailed in the "International Classification of Diseases." In certain branches of medicine, standardized nomenclatures are used. For instance, the fourth edition of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," known as DSM-IV, provides a detailed classification of officially acknowledged psychiatric disorders. Historically, there was no uniform system for classifying diseases, and the causes of death were often described through symptom narratives. The formal classification of diseases began in the 19th century, thanks to the pioneering work of early medical statisticians like William Farr (1807-1883) and Jacques Bertillon (1851-1922). The French government organized the first International Conference to revise the Bertillon or International Classification of Causes of Death in 1900.
