A CPR cycle is one complete round of chest compressions followed by rescue breaths, performed in a defined ratio to sustain circulation and oxygen delivery during cardiac arrest. For adult CPR the standard ratio is 30 compressions to 2 breaths, while two-rescuer infant and child CPR uses 15 compressions to 2 breaths.
Rescuers repeat these cycles continuously, pausing only briefly for rhythm checks or AED analysis, and switching compressors roughly every two minutes (about five cycles) to prevent fatigue and maintain compression quality. Keeping the cycle uninterrupted is essential, because each pause causes blood flow and pressure to drop, reducing the likelihood of a successful resuscitation.
