Definition of BLS Algorithm

BLS Algorithm

The BLS Algorithm is a step-by-step flowchart that directs responders through the correct sequence of Basic Life Support actions based on the victim's condition. It begins with scene safety and checking responsiveness and breathing, then moves to activating emergency services, retrieving an AED, and starting chest compressions.

The algorithm guides the rescuer through the compression-to-ventilation ratio (30:2 for single-rescuer adult CPR), AED use as soon as the device arrives, and continuous cycles of CPR with minimal interruptions. Separate pathways exist for adult, child, and infant victims and for single- versus multi-rescuer scenarios, ensuring responders apply the right technique quickly and consistently during a cardiac emergency.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
