IPV, or the inactivated vaccine, contains a polio virus that has been killed. Known as the Salk vaccine, it is named after Jonas Salk, the American doctor and virologist who developed it. Two vaccines are currently available to combat polio: the IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) and the OPV (oral polio vaccine).IPV is administered via an injection in the arm or leg, while OPV, as its name implies, is given orally and is typically recommended for most children. Children should receive four doses of OPV at the ages of 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months, and 4-6 years.Individuals who are allergic to eggs or the medications neomycin or streptomycin should opt for OPV instead of IPV. On the other hand, IPV is advised for those undergoing long-term treatment, those with cancer, or if a household member is immunocompromised or if there is an unimmunized adult in the home.
