Definition of AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable, computerized device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and, when a shockable rhythm is detected, delivers a controlled electric shock to help restore an effective heartbeat during cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed for the public as well as professionals, using clear voice prompts and visual cues to guide the user step by step.

The device is most effective against shockable rhythms such as ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia; it will not deliver a shock for non-shockable rhythms like asystole or pulseless electrical activity. AED use is integrated into the chain of survival alongside chest compressions — the device tells the rescuer when to resume CPR between rhythm checks.

Early defibrillation, ideally within the first few minutes of collapse, dramatically improves survival. Knowing where AEDs are located and how to use one without hesitation is a core skill taught in CPR Certification Labs' hands-on, AHA-aligned BLS and CPR courses.
