Definition of Women's hospital

Hospitals designed specifically for women were once quite common. The first of such institutions was the Woman's Hospital of New York City, established in 1855. It was founded by the Woman's Hospital Association, a collective of 30 women who believed in the necessity of a healthcare facility dedicated solely to women's care.In 1832, the Boston Lying-in Hospital was created with a focus on childbirth and maternity care. Later, in 1875, the Free Hospital for Women was established, and these two institutions eventually merged to become the Boston Hospital for Women. However, the trend of maintaining women-only hospitals has decreased over time. Nowadays, these specialized facilities are often integrated into larger, general hospitals. For instance, the Boston Hospital for Women is now incorporated into Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard. Similarly, the Women's Hospital in Baltimore and many others have ceased to exist as standalone institutions.
