Definition of Uterine fornix

Uterine fornix

The Uterine Fornix:The uterine fornix, known in medical terms as "fornix uteri," consists of the anterior and posterior spaces into which the upper part of the vagina is divided. These arch-like spaces are created by the cervix bulging into the vagina. The fornix uteri is also referred to as the fornix vaginae, or the vaginal fornix. The term "fornix" denotes a structure that resembles a vault or arch, originating from the Latin word for these shapes. Essentially, a fornix can be located anywhere in the body. In the brain, the fornix is a fibrous, arching formation that links the two cerebral lobes. Meanwhile, the fornix conjunctivae consists of loose, arching folds that join the membrane lining the inside of the eyelid with the conjunctival membrane covering the eye.Interestingly, "fornix" is linked to the term "fornication." In ancient Rome, prostitutes would congregate under the arches of certain public structures, leading to the term "going under the arches" to describe engaging in illicit sexual activities, which became known as fornication.
