Definition of Leiomyoma

Leiomyoma is a type of tumor that develops in smooth muscle tissue, which is found in organs such as the heart and uterus. When it occurs in the uterus, it is often referred to as a fibroid. Fibroids represent the most frequent reason for performing a hysterectomy. Although they may be present without noticeable symptoms, fibroids are clinically evident in up to 25% of women and can lead to significant health issues. These include extended or heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, and, in rare instances, reproductive challenges. The financial burden and impact on quality of life due to fibroids are considerable. Despite not being cancerous, fibroids can be managed with medications that adjust hormone levels, though side effects limit their prolonged use. Surgical removal of fibroids is considered if they cause significant discomfort or complications. Besides hysterectomy and abdominal myomectomy, several less invasive surgical techniques have been developed for fibroid removal.
