Definition of Protean

Protean describes something that is highly adaptable, frequently changing, or capable of taking on various forms. It should not be confused with protein, which is an essential chemical component found in all living organisms. The term "protean" is derived from Proteus, a figure in Greek mythology known for his ability to change his appearance at will. Proteus was the caretaker of Poseidon's marine creatures and possessed the power of prophecy. To keep his knowledge hidden, he would transform into different shapes to avoid being questioned. The only way to extract information from him was to catch him off guard during his sleep and hold him fast as he rapidly shifted forms until he divulged his secrets. Therefore, something described as protean is as versatile and changeable as the legendary Proteus. For instance, the manifestations of certain phenomena can be numerous and therefore protean.
