Penis, erection of the

Erection of the Penis: This refers to the condition when the penis becomes engorged with blood and turns firm. The penis is equipped with two long chambers known as the corpora cavernosa, which are filled with spongy tissue and encased in a membrane called the tunica albuginea. This spongy tissue comprises smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which serves as the conduit for both urine and ejaculate, runs beneath the corpora cavernosa. An erection is initiated by sensory and mental stimuli, with signals from the brain and nearby nerves prompting the relaxation of the muscles within the corpora cavernosa. This relaxation allows blood to flow in, filling the spaces and creating pressure that causes the penis to enlarge. The tunica albuginea plays a crucial role in maintaining the erection by trapping the blood within the corpora cavernosa. The erection subsides when the muscles in the penis contract, halting blood inflow and opening channels for outflow.
