Definition of Good Samaritan Law

Good Samaritan Law

Good Samaritan laws are legal protections that shield people who voluntarily provide reasonable assistance to someone who is injured, ill, or in danger from being sued for unintentional harm. Their purpose is to reduce bystanders' hesitation to help during emergencies for fear of legal consequences.

These laws generally protect rescuers who act in good faith, within the scope of their training, and without expectation of payment — for example, a bystander performing CPR or using an AED on a cardiac arrest victim. Protections vary by state and country, and they typically do not cover grossly negligent or reckless conduct. Understanding these protections encourages trained and untrained responders alike to act when seconds count.

CPR Certification Labs provides hands-on, American Heart Association–aligned CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification training to help providers master these life-saving skills.
