Epidermis:The epidermis is the top or outermost layer of the skin's two primary layers. It primarily consists of flat, scale-like cells known as squamous cells. Beneath these squamous cells are rounder cells referred to as basal cells. The deepest section of the epidermis houses melanocytes, which are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. The dermis is the other key layer, located beneath the epidermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, hair follicles, and glands. These glands are responsible for producing sweat, which aids in regulating body temperature, and sebum, an oily substance that prevents the skin from drying out. Sweat and sebum are released to the skin's surface through small openings known as pores.
