Definition of Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a prescribed medication designed to assist individuals struggling with addiction to opiates. It helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, nausea, and sleeplessness. Compared to other opiates, it has a lower risk of addiction and overdose. The effects of buprenorphine can last for around three days. It is marketed under the brand name Subutex, and when combined with naloxone, it is known as Suboxone. Subutex is used at the start of addiction treatment, while Suboxone is intended for ongoing maintenance. Naloxone is included in Suboxone to prevent misuse by injection among those dependent on opiates. Potential side effects of buprenorphine include symptoms similar to a cold or flu, headaches, sweating, sleep disturbances, nausea, and mood changes. It may also lead to dangerously reduced breathing, particularly if taken with alcohol or other depressants.
