Another term for a local growth on the skin's outer layer, caused by a virus. This virus, known as the human papillomavirus, spreads through contact. This contact can occur with either another person's wart or one's own (a process known as autoinoculation). Warts found on the hands or feet are typically referred to as common warts, while those on the sole of the foot are known as plantar warts. Genital warts, located on the genital area, may be spread through sexual contact. The term "wart" comes from Old English and has been used since the 8th century. The Latin word for wart is "verruca," and a common wart is medically termed "verruca vulgaris." In some medical contexts, a wart is also referred to by its Spanish name, "verruga."
