Pulmonary fibrosis is characterized by scarring throughout the lungs, which can result from various conditions like hypersensitivity pneumonitis, asbestosis, and certain medications. It can also develop without a known cause, in which case it is termed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Common symptoms include breathlessness, coughing, and reduced exercise capacity. Treatment typically involves corticosteroids, such as prednisone, and/or other medications to suppress the immune system. The main aim of treatment is to reduce lung inflammation and prevent further scarring. Patients' responses to treatment can differ, and the potential side effects and toxicity of the treatment can be significant. As a result, individuals with pulmonary fibrosis are usually managed by lung specialists.
