Definition of Periodontitis

Periodontitis

Periodontitis refers to gum disease, where the term itself means "inflammation around the tooth." This condition, along with other periodontal diseases, results from bacterial infections that damage the fibers and bone supporting the teeth. If not addressed, such infections can eventually lead to tooth loss. The primary culprit is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless layer that continually forms on the teeth.Periodontics is the dental field focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases that affect the gums and the structures supporting the teeth. Additionally, periodontists specialize in placing and maintaining dental implants. This discipline is among the eight dental specialties recognized by the dental association.
