Definition of Pandemic

Pandemic:A sudden outbreak that spreads extensively, impacting an entire region, continent, or the world, primarily due to a population's vulnerability. By definition, a genuine pandemic results in high mortality rates.Conversely, an epidemic refers to an occurrence where the number of disease cases in a community or region surpasses what is typically expected within a specific time frame. It represents a sharp and severe outbreak within a particular area or group, such as malaria in Africa or AIDS among intravenous drug users. An endemic, however, refers to a disease that is consistently present in a community but at a low rate. It persists continuously, much like certain diseases in specific parts of the world or the presence of illicit drugs in certain neighborhoods. The term "pandemic" is derived from the Greek "pan-" meaning "all," and "demos," meaning "people" or "population," translating to "pandemos," or "all the people." A pandemic impacts nearly all individuals. In contrast, "epi-" translates to "upon," indicating an epidemic is something that befalls the population. Meanwhile, "en-" means "in," signifying that an endemic exists within the people.
