Nervous colon syndrome is a prevalent condition marked by abnormal gut contractions, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, changes in stool consistency, and irregular bowel movements that alternate between diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms are typically chronic and fluctuate over time. Although it can cause persistent discomfort, it doesn't result in significant organ damage. The diagnosis often involves ruling out other conditions, and treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms. This may include dietary adjustments, such as increasing fiber intake and reducing dairy and sweeteners, as well as incorporating exercise, relaxation techniques, and medications. It is also known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and spastic colon.
