Definition of Ischemia

Ischemia

Ischemia is a reduction in blood flow to a tissue or organ, depriving it of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. When blood supply is restricted — often by narrowed or blocked arteries — the affected tissue becomes injured, and prolonged ischemia can lead to permanent cell death (infarction).

Myocardial ischemia, reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, can cause chest pain (angina), trigger dangerous arrhythmias, and lead to a heart attack or cardiac arrest. Recognizing the warning signs of ischemia and restoring blood flow quickly — through interventions such as medications or procedures that reopen blocked vessels — is central to preventing lasting cardiac damage.
