Definition of Female gonad

The female gonad, known as the ovary or "egg sac," consists of a pair of reproductive glands in women. Positioned in the pelvic area, each ovary sits on either side of the uterus and resembles an almond in both size and shape. The ovaries serve two primary purposes: the production of eggs (ova) and the secretion of female hormones. During each menstrual cycle, one ovary releases an egg, which then travels through a fallopian tube to reach the uterus. The ovaries are the principal source of female hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, which are crucial for the development of female physical traits such as breast size, body shape, and body hair. Additionally, these hormones play a significant role in regulating the menstrual cycle and supporting pregnancy.
