Definition of Fear of age

Fear of aging, known as gerascophobia, is an irrational and ongoing anxiety about getting older. Individuals with this fear often experience unnecessary worry over aging, despite being in good health physically, financially, and in other aspects of life. Concerns may include losing their appearance, independence, or activity level after retirement, facing reduced mobility, developing illnesses, or being confined to a nursing home. The contemporary obsession with maintaining a youthful appearance only intensifies these worries. The quest to stay youthful had a notable historical impact when Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas, heard from Native Americans about a "fountain of youth" located on an island called Bimini, north of Cuba. In 1513, Ponce de León embarked on a journey to find this legendary place and ended up discovering Florida. The term "gerascophobia" comes from the Greek words "geras" (meaning old age) and "phobos" (meaning fear). Other English terms derived from "geras" include "geriatrics" (the branch of medicine that deals with the health and care of older adults) and "gerontology" (the study of aging).
