Definition of Teratophobia

Teratophobia

Teratophobia refers to the fear of having a child with deformities. A phobia is an irrational fear that can lead to avoidance and panic. Phobias are a fairly common form of anxiety disorder. They can be addressed through behavioral therapy, which employs exposure and fear reduction strategies. Often, medications such as anti-anxiety or antidepressants can be beneficial, particularly in the initial phases of treatment. The term "teratophobia" is derived from "terato-" and "-phobia." The prefix "terato-" originates from the Greek word "teras," meaning monster, and "-phobia" from the Greek "phobos," meaning fear. Thus, it literally translates to the fear of monsters. Teratology is the scientific study of abnormalities, and any factor that can lead to such abnormalities is referred to as a teratogen.Dysmorphophobia is a similar term that also describes the fear of having a child with deformities. Dysmorphology is another term for the study of congenital malformations or birth defects.
