They may feel uneasy about the prospect of seeing others without clothes, being seen unclothed themselves, or both. This fear might originate from general anxiety about sexuality, concerns about their physical appearance being inadequate, or the vulnerability of having their body and personality exposed without protection. The term "gymnophobia" comes from the Greek words "gymnos," meaning naked, and "phobos," meaning fear. Interestingly, the word "gymnasium" originates from the Greek "gymnasion," a place for athletic training, which itself comes from "gymnasein," meaning to train in the nude.
