Ginseng has been a staple in Chinese medicine for millennia. Nowadays, the term "ginseng" includes both American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng). These species share a similar chemical structure and contain ginsenosides, which are thought to be their active compounds. In contrast, Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is a distinct plant that lacks these ginsenosides.Panax ginseng is believed to enhance cognitive performance, assist in stress management, and boost energy levels. However, research has shown it to be ineffective for mood enhancement and improving athletic performance. Further studies are needed to explore its effects on depression, chronic fatigue, cancer, colds, flu, fever, digestive issues, and more. Potential side effects of ginseng include increased blood pressure, headaches, nausea, insomnia, and nosebleeds. Additionally, it can lead to falsely abnormal digoxin blood test results in individuals using this medication for heart conditions. The impact of ginseng on female hormones is still uncertain, and its use during pregnancy is not advised. Ginseng may interfere with normal blood clotting by affecting platelets. Therefore, it should be avoided by those taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen, or anticoagulants such as warfarin. Ginseng may also cause symptoms like headaches, tremors, anxiety, and insomnia and should not be used by individuals with certain disorders or conditions.
