RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to operate within the kidney using a fiberoptic viewing instrument. In this technique, the scope is inserted through the urinary opening and travels through the urinary tract until it reaches the kidney's urine-collecting area. This method involves moving the instrument in a retrograde fashion, which means it ascends through the urinary system to reach the kidney (intrarenal).RIRS is often utilized for the removal of kidney stones. Through the scope, the stone is visible and can be manipulated, broken apart using ultrasound, vaporized with a laser, or removed with small forceps. The surgery is conducted by a specialized urologist with expertise in RIRS, and it typically takes place under general or spinal anesthesia.Compared to open surgery, RIRS offers several benefits, including a quicker resolution of the issue, reduced postoperative pain, and a significantly faster recovery time.
