Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive procedure that has proven effective in mapping blood vessels of a certain size within the head and neck. It is often used alongside traditional MRI scans to assess these areas. Although conventional angiograms, which involve injecting contrast material via a catheter into the body's blood vessels, remain the most accurate for determining vessel anatomy, MRA offers a quicker and simpler alternative. It avoids the use of catheters and contrast material, thereby reducing the associated risks. Additionally, MRA provides images of brain tissue.MRA encompasses various imaging techniques that visualize blood vessels by detecting changes in MR signals due to alterations in blood flow caused by vessel shape. This method is capable of identifying small aneurysms, or vessel ballooning, as small as 4 millimeters in diameter, though smaller aneurysms may require a traditional angiogram for detection. The ability of MRA to detect aneurysms can be influenced by factors such as intracranial bleeding and the aneurysm's location. In addition to aneurysms, MRA can reveal vascular abnormalities and malformations within the brain, as well as atherosclerosis in the neck's arteries. However, MRA is not significantly useful for detecting or characterizing brain cancer.
