Definition of Tetracycline

Tetracycline

Tetracycline is a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics that are effective against a wide range of organisms. It is known to combat bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes gonorrhea. Additionally, tetracycline is prescribed for the treatment of non-gonococcal infections caused by Ureaplasma, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, chancroid, brucellosis, and other infections. It is also used in combination with other drugs to treat Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria linked to stomach and duodenal ulcers. Tetracycline can adversely affect bone development, so it is typically not advised for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. In children under 8 years old, it may lead to tooth discoloration. Some brand names of tetracycline include Achromycin and Sumycin.
