Disc: A term used to refer to an intervertebral disc, which is a disc-shaped piece of specialized tissue that separates the vertebrae of the spine. The center of a disc, known as the nucleus, is soft and elastic, absorbing the impact from activities like standing, walking, and running. Surrounding the nucleus is the annulus, a ring-shaped structure that provides the disc with stability and strength. This annulus is made up of a complex series of interwoven fibrous layers that secure the nucleus in place.A disc may become herniated, a condition commonly called a slipped disc, due to the displacement of nuclear material from the center. When the nucleus is subjected to excessive pressure, it can cause the annulus to rupture or tear. If a disc herniates or ruptures, it can exert pressure on one or more spinal nerves, leading to symptoms such as pain, weakness, or numbness. The terms slipped disc, herniated disc, prolapsed disc, and ruptured disc all describe the same condition.
