Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus and are the most common reason for performing a hysterectomy. Although fibroids can exist without noticeable symptoms, they are clinically evident in up to 25% of women, leading to significant health issues such as heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, discomfort or pain, and, in rare instances, problems with fertility. The financial burden and impact of fibroids on quality of life can be considerable. Hormonal treatments can be effective in managing fibroids, but their long-term use is often limited due to side effects. If fibroids cause significant discomfort or complications, they may need to be surgically removed. Surgery remains the primary method for treating fibroids, with options ranging from hysterectomy and abdominal myomectomy to various minimally invasive techniques. Medically, a uterine fibroid is also referred to as a leiomyoma or simply a myoma of the uterus.
