The retina is a layer of nerves that covers the interior back part of the eye. It detects light and generates signals that travel to the brain via the optic nerve. A specific section of the retina, known as the macula, contains unique cells that are sensitive to light and enable us to see fine details with clarity. The eye consists of several other parts, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, optic nerve, and vitreous. The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye, responsible for transmitting and focusing light. The iris, the colored portion of the eye, regulates the light entering. The pupil, a dark opening within the iris, controls the amount of light allowed inside. The lens, a clear structure within the eye, focuses light onto the retina. The optic nerve links the eye to the brain, sending the retina's signals to the brain's visual cortex. Lastly, the vitreous is a clear gel filling the eye's central area.
