Definition of Kashin-Beck disease

Kashin-Beck disease

Kashin-Beck disease is a condition affecting the bones and joints in the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, and ankles of children and teenagers. It leads to gradually stiffening and misshapen joints, reduced limb length, and short stature, caused by the deterioration of bone growth plates and joints. This disease is prevalent in certain regions of eastern Siberia, Korea, China, and Tibet, and is likely linked to environmental factors. This is evident as children who relocate to these areas develop the disease, while those who leave tend to recover. Supplementation does not impact the condition once it is established, but correcting deficiencies is crucial, as they are clearly related to the disease. Also known as Kashin-Bek disease, locals in affected areas often refer to it as big bone disease.
